Policing International Trade in Endangered Species: The Cities Treaty and Compliance by Rosalind Reeve,

Policing International Trade in Endangered Species: The Cities Treaty and Compliance by Rosalind Reeve,
Regulation of the international trade in wildlife, worth billions of dollars a year, is the subject of one of the oldest multilateral environmental agreements, the 1973 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or CITES. Seen as the flagship wildlife agreement and best known for imposing a ban on international trade in elephant ivory, its mandate covers over 30,000 species. Essential to the Convention's success is its system for inducing compliance with its rules. This thoroughly researched and clearly written book traces the evolution and analyses the effectiveness of the CITES compliance system. It identifies weaknesses and draws on experience from other international compliance systems to suggest improvements. It also provides case studies of noncompliant countries subjected to bans on trade in CITES species, and discusses the compatibility of the Convention's trade provisions with those of the World Trade Organization.

International Wildlife Trade: A Cites Sourcebook by Ginette Hemley,
For more than two decades, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, known as CITES, has been one of the largest and most effective conservation agreements in the world. By regulating international commerce in certain species - from African elephants and exotic birds to hardwoods and bulbs - the treaty limits trade in species that are in genuine need of protection while allowing controlled trade in species that can withstand some level of exploitation. In addition to explaining how CITES operates, this definitive reference includes: the full text of the CITES treatyCITES Appendices I, II, and III a list of Parties as of March 1994 a list of reservations by Parties as of October 1993 Chapters address the status of highly threatened species such as elephants, rhinos, and tigers as well as other heavily exploited species including parrots, primates, and bears. International Wildlife Trade provides a valuable overview of wildlife trade issues, and of the strengths and weaknesses of the current treaty.

Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna - The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement between Governments, drafted as a result of a resolution adopted in 1963 at a meeting of members of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival and accords varying degrees of protection to more than 30,000 species of animals and plants.

Fauna and Flora Preservation Society - The Fauna and Flora Preservation Society, officially renamed the Fauna and Flora International, was founded in 1903 as the Society for the Preservation of the Wild Fauna of the Empire by a group of British naturalists and American statesmen in Africa. It was then called the Fauna Preservation Society, before being renamed Fauna and Flora Preservation Society in 1981.
